All our squash came from seed saved from butternuts that tasted the best. (Those butternuts came from a friend that planted random squash in a field of sorghum). And the variance is crazy.
If the huge ones taste good I’m definitely going to save the seed.

Looking good guys! You are in for some fine eating this winter!
I like the potimarron. A round very dense squash. We had it in RI too! I think it was called ‘Buttercup. Very, good!
Yes, i like your taste! Those are delicious! I really like walthum butternut also. I like all squash.
Have any of you with vine borders tried injecting neem oil? I tried squash for the first time and all the vines were eaten out.
Winter Squash readily cross and also cross with summer squash, pumpkins etc…i have had tan colored pumpkins with the flavor of butternuts way to many times. This link gives you an idea of what i used to grow Clarkinks older fruit and vegetable growing Projects in Kansas
Never tried that. I know nicotines aka tobacco are sometimes used to poson bugs. Mow i think they synthesize those. I’m not a good person to give that advise since i never have that problem.
Thats what happens with my zuchini. Wow do i get that! You have a nice patch!
Me too!
Maybe you just grow a cheese type c.moschata ? As far as I know species within genus Cucurbita don’t hybridize easly. Interspecific hybridization for transfer of hull-less seed trait from Cucurbita pepo to C. moschata | Scientific Reports
No it was a hybrid netween connecticut field pumpkin and waltham butternut or neck pumpkins. Ones like these i grew in the photo in the link above is where the cross came from.
Have you obtained such specimens from various Connecticut field fruits? If the seeds were taken from Waltham Butternut it could have been some intra-varietal mutation, which occurs quite often in this species.
I honestly dont recall which i saved the seed from. This was a number of years ago. I was surprised to see tan pumpkin shaped fruits. Above you can see what i grew the previous year before that occurred.
When seeing signs of vine borers I’ve injected peroxide with some success.
What are the black pumpkins in the pile?
Those are called buttercup. They are very dark green almost black. Easy to grow and tasty heirloom.
