Squirrels and apple maggot traps

Hi all,

I want to use an apple maggot trap this year, the red balls with sticky exterior. However, we have a friendly squirrel who is no bother and I don’t want him to come to harm and get stuck on it or something like that.

Has anyone used these and experienced any birds or other animals of that size coming to harm because of the glue?

Thanks!

Ian

I had a young sparrow die in a codling moth trap once.

Yes, I have used red plastic spheres/balls smeared with TangledFoot glue many years. No birds has ever been hurt by them. Flies, mosquitoes, yes.

I almost laughed when you said you were worried about a friendly squirrel. Once your apple trees set fruit, your friendly squirrel will take all your apples. It does not know how to share. It likely will bring more friends.

If you search “squirrels” on this forum, you will find out what squirrels can do to backyard growers.

Lol thanks. Yes he took a couple last year but nothing excessive, but that’s ok, he can have those. I’m willing to share with him.

I appreciate your response.
