Starting chestnuts from seed

Happy Thanksgiving everybody. I’m tired of googling and trying to find chestnut seeds to put into cold stratification. Last year I collected from a tree at a friends property, but this year there was alot of worm damage to the nuts. Does anybody have a lead where I can buy chestnuts to grow. I’m sure I can’t buy from a grocery store and try and grow. Does anybody have a website they use? Or can sell some to me. Hope everybody has a wonderful day!

My local grocery stores carry Italy imported chestnut. My local oriental grocery stores carry fresh Chinese chestnut. You just need to look for it. I bought small amount from each stores that sells chestnut. I use floating method to eliminate worm damaged, mold chestnuts :chestnut:. I stored good ones in a zip lock bag in fridge till spring. Most will sprout, but watch squirrels dig up the nut underground

Have you gotten them to grow into a seedling? And if so would love to see a picture if possible.

Yes, but no pictures. it’s covered now, trying to prevent it from rabbits

Check out Buzz Ferver’s Perfect Circle Farm… IDK if he still has chestnut seednuts available, but he usually has a good selection of excellent parentage.

I’m located in Austria (Europe) and the bag of chestnuts was from an international seller intended for human consumption. Unless the chestnuts have been boiled or otherwise heat-treated or deep-frozen then store bought ones should generally also be capable of germination. Good luck with your endeavors!
