I had seen recipes with cooking apples with collards but never tried it. While waiting for the collards to cook, I started eating a very ripe Smokehouse apple that was nice and sweet. I decided to throw in some some slices in the last five minutes of steaming.
Wow! I loved how it sweetened up the collards. Added a little salt and Apple Cider Vinegar before serving. The apples was like little pockets of applesauce as they cooked down quick. Definitely will be doing it again.
Champion collards steamed for 20 minutes.
What a good idea! Apples and cabbage are a match made in heaven, and collards are similar in some ways to cabbage. I’ll have to try it sometime! Thank you for sharing!
My favorite collard/apple combo is one where the wavy leafed collards are cooked alone with salted pork, and the apples/wine/onions/dijon mustard are fried separately and used as a pork sirloin topping.
Pork sirloin with the apple/onion topping with a side of collards and sweet corn muffins/cornbread is one heck of a meal.
