Straw mulch sucks

I just buy the cheapest good bales of hay I can find and place it where I plant to spread it a month before I need to. The rain either sprouts the seeds or rots them. Any sprouted seed not dead are easily removed as mulch is spread.

dont do it. lol

When they were cutting here I got three truck loads of it. It is best to let it set a year before using it to get rid of seed and to heat up a little. Wish I had more and a nice front end loader to go with it.

Clark, my boss’s wife has a bunch of horse stalls (10-15) and they go through about 3,000 bales of hay/straw per year for feed. My boss has told me the opposite about straw in the past, that the good stuff isn’t supposed to have any seed. The caveat there being that good for animal feed and good for mulching are two completely different things.
