Strawberry runner question

Hi all. I’m new to growing strawberries. Overnight, these viny things popped up right next to several of the strawberries. Are these runners? I’m only asking because the leaves look different than our strawberry leaves, and previous runners I’ve seen on friends’ plants had leaves that looked just like the mother plant.

Any thoughts?

No that is very nasty knot weed. Get it out!!!

Or wild morning glory.

Mrs. G is correct. I have that stuff trying to pop up all over my garden. It’s a weed and will choke other plants out if it is allowed to grow. Your strawberry runners will indeed look just like mini versions of the mother plant.

Based on the leaves, think it’s morning glory, it’s a vine that will crawl up anything. It’s done that on some of my tree cages that I haven’t kept weeded.

I don’t have MG in my strawberries, but another invasive weed that looks like a strawberry plant, sends out lots of runners, and has small yellow flowers. It’s called cinquefoil and is very aggressive. The way to tell it isn’t a strawb is that this variety has five leaves (cinque + foil = five leaves), domesticated strawbs have three leaves.

Here’s a pic I took of it:

Thanks! I thought so, but I wanted to double check.

Probably have to blame it on the birds. They love visiting my yard and they drop all kinds of seeds all over the place. Once found a watermelon growing in my little orchard. I’ve never planted watermelon.
