I got my Tetraploid Mignonette yesterday, I intend to give it tender love and care and multiply it as much as possible. I also successfully requested several tetraploid Rubus (including primocane-bearers) for the experiment. Meanwhile my diploid vescas are starting to put on size, as are the Silverweed. There’s a lot to unpack here, and a lot of ways these experiments can go.
The tetraploid Mignonette has been flowering for a while, but no fruit set. ¿Is it ordinarily unfruitful or is it just the current heat dome? ¿Or maybe the relatively recent transplantation?
The tetraploid ‘Mignonette’ I got from the USDA last year produced some fruit this year, but mine was a cutting whereas yours were from seed right? Hard to say if the lack of fruiting is due to climate differences or fertility issues among the seedlings.
I’ve kept the seeds in cold storage, and managed to acquire the same cutting-grown clone as yours.
Should I already be crossbreeding? It’s still flowering, and at the same ploidy level I have PAF flowering almost perpetually.
No harm in attempting to make some crosses.
Hi, I have a tetraploid Raspberry and I am going to do this cross and the reverse, this Spring in Australia. Will post how it goes.
Nice! I managed to get tetraploid raspberry seeds from the USDA, but they only sent me 4 seeds and they didn’t germinate.
Hi, I sowed about 50 seeds of selfed 4x raspberry and only one germinated.
I also have a hexaploid Blackberry x Raspberry hybrid, so I will try and cross this with strawberry, to give a 7x hybrid. It may be fertile, Boysenberry is 7x and it fruits.
Someone recently liked my above post about the tetraploid and allegedly hermaphrodite Fragaria thibetica, so I thought I’d update. It flowered both last year and this year and never set a single berry, so I’m thinking it either isn’t truly hermaphrodite or if it is then it isn’t able to self pollinate. Either way, it makes me feel less excited about trying to do anything with it. I am thinking about retiring it (I’m basically the Marie Kondo of plants).
