Strong winds impact orchard, fruitlets, and grafting

This year we continue to get back to back wind storms. I’m not sure how strong they are everywhere else but in my part of Kansas i’m using strictly cleft grafts anytime i can. Some of the leaves and fruitlets are literally being stripped off my pear trees! Yesterday my hat was blown off time after time and one bag of scions dissapeared. My straight trees hopefully dont wind up leaning south long term but it does happen. These are the type of winds that break limbs full of branches loaded with fruit later in the year.

luckily the standard sized trees you have are stronger rooted and can take the wind better than the smaller ones. longer branches are also more forgiving. might prune some fruit off for you so you get some nice big ones.

I have lost bark grafts in heavy wind, they get support now if needed. I am also doing more cleft in general recently as takes have been a bit higher there. It is also windy here now but nothing like Kansas. No good spray windows until Thursday now.
