Looks like one of my sweet potato vine has set fruits/berries which is new to me. Has anyone growing sweet potatoes come across this and can I use the seeds to grow a plant?
You can try it out for kicks. You can discover and name your own sweet potato variety. : ) But I’m thinking vegetative propagation is more predictable, faster, and easier.
That’d be the procedure for coming up with another variety of sweet potato. Odds are an inferior variety, but you never know. Go for it.
Yes! You can harvest them as soon as the seeds are black inside, and it will mature off the plant. The germination will be quite low the first year from seed, but subsequent generations will become more adept at making lots of blooms and seed, and the germ % will grow. I start them on a heat mat about when you’d start slips, maybe a bit earlier.
Thank you. Unfortunately our season is ending here in PNW, starting tomorrow the weather is turning grey and rainy for next couple of weeks. I don’t want to risk spoilt tubers at the end of this season. Hopefully, I will get a few berries next year.
