I need to build a T trellis system for grapes and kiwis combined. I have a 50’ length or a little more. Question is, have anyone tried planting grapes and kiwis on same structure? anyone has built something similar they can share some tips?
I’ll be planting 4-5 kiwis including a male, and about 5 kinds of grapes. I need to do it quick, before summer.
I just grow my kiwis on a grape trellis. I let it send out side branch scaffolds instead of using the T. It probably doesn’t give the maximum harvest amount but I still get tons of kiwis.
I see, I had a T trellis that was 10’ I grew a pair of kiwis. It was easy to manage. but the posts and the arms were bent a couple years later due to the weight. I will have to 6x6 posts instead of the 4x4, and probably use 4x4 for the arms. I’ve been searching for designs and supplies that would make this project easy.
I used cheap 3x4 landscape timber posts and they are still hanging in there ten years later. A few rotted at the soil line and I just pounded a metal post one either side and secured the metal to the wood posts to fix that. It uses 10 gauge wire.
I’m not sure why your trellis did not hold up, mine is 50’ long. I have the ends secured with ground anchors, both for the wires and the posts are also wired to the ground anchors to keep them upright. I didn’t have the posts themselves wired at the beginning and they started to bend in, thats when I added the wires holding them upright.
