The gnomes at The Arboreum Company have returned

Scott,

How old is your Pearl do you suppose?

Congrats on the mother load set.

Its from spring 2004 - only 12 years :slightly_smiling:

I had the Euros planted too closely and the light isn’t good so I expect I have found the upper bound on it.

I sure hope I get some fruit, the curculio seems much worse this year than usual. Part of which is due to the rain vs weather timing – I really need a spray now but its supposed to rain up to half an inch tonight so I am waiting.

Mariposa, Elephant Heart, Howard Miracle are common varieties, you can easily find Dave Wilson trees in many retail nurseries. Advantages are that you have a much larger tree for less money, can select the rootstock, and can plant the tree in January (instead of waiting for Arboreum’s delivery in March), which gives it more time to get established before the summer heat.

That’s what I was thinking last year. Turns out, it’s much simpler that I thought. I’ve made a whole bunch of grafts this spring for the first time in my life and the success rate was surprisingly high. Grafting in California is a bliss — good weather with relatively stable temperatures and no freezes in late winter/early spring, plus CRFG scion exchange meetings all over the state are a great source of scionwood.

Hey Plummer, did Arboreum try to call you? Once, twice maybe? I think you owe them a call back before you post. They are an excellent firm. Different yes, to beware, no.

“Let the buyer beware” is a translation of a well-worn Latin phrase, “caveat emptor”. I did contact them about my concerns about their website and I received a response. As I have said about them, I think they are a very good company and their trees are top notch. And they were very helpful and knowledgeable. The “beware” part of my post is that sometimes their website is not correct (caveat emptor). I know I would have liked to know before I purchased from them that the rootstocks they had listed on the website were not what they actually are. So I don’t think it’s inappropriate for me to post about my experience, or the fact that the information about the rootstocks of ALL of their Asian plums on the site is erroneous (still).

I have every intention of ordering from them again, which should say plenty about what I think about them. But I’m also going to confirm the information about the trees before I do.

They admitted their mistake and then offered to come to your house to teach you or help you with the grafting onto the new rootstock. That is excellent service. And. . . unheard service from most nurseries. You did have to return their call, however, to have this offer transpire. Glad you’re going back, they have excellent trees.

Did you talk to these people about my situation? I never got a call, there was never an offer to fix this. You are assuming an awful lot.

Rob, Did you get to eat from your Moniqui? How do you like it?

Just got an email announcement that the gnomes of The Arboreum Company are retiring and will cease trading as of 30 June 2024.

That’s sad to hear. They offered a lot of stuff that no one else did.

I bought the majority of my fruit trees from them when I lived in the US. Sad. Good trees!

I hope they pass on the life’s work collection so it’s not lost. They have one of the best researched and correct identification nurseries I’ve ever seen. Singlehandedly responsible for rescuing many fruit cultivars.

Yes, and they were friends too!
