Thoughts about Captan

It looks like Captan 50 is discontinued and Captan 80 WDG is hard to get. I just order a 5 lbs bag of Captan 80 from Keystone Pest Solutions, I hope it ships. My guess is the next time I go to order Captan in a few years it will be unavailable in any form. The popular low spray synthetic guide recommends Captan. Will it be updated with Captan 80 wdg and another alternative as not everyone needs 5 lbs of Captan? Looking through the threads, it looks like 80 to 85% of 1 TBSP is the recommended rate cor Captan 80 wdg. Will the spray rate guide be updated? Captan 50 and Indar or Immunox had been my go-to spray for years. Disappointing to see another chemical bite the dust.

Look for Captan Gold 80%WDG 6.25lb. If you have a reasonably close Nutrien Solutions or other ag supplier you may be able to have it shipped to you for around $80. It has gotten very expensive so home suppliers aren’t bothering to package it except at absurd prices. It seems to be in the process of being erased from that market but is still an essential fungicide for commercial ag all over the world.

Maybe when stores stock up for spring it will become more widely available in smaller packaging, but this has been going on for a while.

Here’s an overview from what they wanted to do in 2024 with regards to peaches. I can’t get docket number to come up with the current status. Basically lowering the rate per acre, enclosed cab and respirator.

On a side note, I hope everyone who uses chlorpyrifos (Lorsban) for peach tree borer control has bought it by now. Sales of it in USA is now over as Dec 19th was the last sales date according to the Feds. My supplier had three cases left of 4E as of 2 weeks ago.

If you are not a commercial grower the need for Captan may not be great. One of the reasons for its importance is that it defies fungal resistance, which is much less important for small plantings with some distance from commercial operations. There are other fungicides like SI’s that have kickback and have longer periods of efficacy between sprays. What takes ten years for fungal resistance to develop in a commercial orchard might take a century in a relatively small mixed fruit orchard.

I switched to using the 4L when I ran out of the 50wp. No dust to deal with and easier to measure a liquid anyway. I buy in 2.5 gal jugs since I am using airblast sprayer and 3.5 qts per arce.

It’s good if you use it up in a season but then it settles and starts to turn into cement. I wasted a lot of it that way back when I used to use it and didn’t have enough business to use it up. I used to only use it in a couple of my spring sprays.

Of course they may have changed the formula sometime in the last 25 years.

Any suggestions on a good alternative to Captan for those of us that use 4 gallon to 16 gallon sprayers?

What are you protecting from what? I use Indar a lot. I guess Infuse is as close to that as you can get in tidy packaging.

I was looking at purchasing some Captan for next years spray. I’m looking to control brown rot in peaches.

Brown Rot and Peach Scab.

I called my Local Southern States Store and they were out of Captan except for 30 pound bags for $157. I forgot to ask if they were Captan 50 or Captan 80. Keystone is selling 6.25 bags of Captan 80 for $76 with shipping. Does anyone know if the 30 pound bags will be available in the future? 30 pounds would be a lifetime plus supply for me.

Captan is very unlikely to be pulled from the market until a fungicide with similar resistance to resistance is invented. It hasn’t been for the last 50 years.

You maybe able to create a share as has been done on this site with Indar.

According to ChatGpt, 3 to 5 years storage life in a climate controlled place and tightly sealed.

Well if you interrogate CHAT further you can get a ballpark figure that Captan, dry formula, when sealed from moisture and stored in a cool place will likely lose 2-5% potency per year, so should still be affective at 10 years if used illegally at double the label rate. Chat also says the destructive qualities of Captan tend to decline in relative ratio to potency.

I often do not get a complete answer from CHAT with a single question.

Use a dehumidifier to make sure room is dry when container is open if you want to preserve it’s potency. Oxygen doesn’t hurt it, but water does.

It’s bad enough leaving residue at regular rates so I would not want to be increasing rates to use old chemicals.

Today I took a look to see what was available for fungicides in small sizes and the only things I could find were organic (sulfur) or Fruit Tree and Plant Guard which also has insecticide. It has pyraclostrobin (fungicide), Lambda- cyhalothrin (insecticide), boscalid (fungicide).

You might look at that one those are the active ingredients in pristine.

I went ahead and bought a 30-pound bag. At $157 if I get 10 years out of it, I will be happy and I guarantee access to the fungicide. The last bag I bought I believe was a 5-pound bag. It lasted 5 plus years. I stored all of my powder chemicals in sealed ammo containers which are relatively moisture tight, if I use a pound a year it will last the rest of fruit growing days … . Thanks everyone for the advice and feedback.

I got five plus years out my last batch stored in ammo containers in a shed with no heat or ac.
