‘Arctic Star’ is basically thrip free this year, but my two year old ‘Spice Zee’ NectaPlum is absolutely loaded with them!
Stunning little tree in bloom though.

How do you identify if a tree has thrips?
I place one hand with my palm open under a flowering branch and flick downward with a finger on the other hand. They will appear as moving slivers in your open palm.
Would they be visible using a magnifying glass?
While feeding? Hard to say. You can flick them onto a paper plate if you are squeamish.
Hahaha! No not squeamish at all! Reason I asked is that I have tried to see them using the exact method you describe and I seen nothing yet. It’s just suprising because I had some pretty big thrip damage on Spice Zee and Double Delight last year. I was afraid I just wasn’t seeing then on my hand but maybe they just haven’t arrived yet. I don’t know.

Give the branch a good sharp flick. If they are there, you’ll see them. They may not be as bad this year overall with all of the rain here in So Cal.
