Tomato Trial 2021: Aiko

If you like ‘Juliet’, you’ll love this tomato a lot more. Same grape size (they call it a mini-plum) and production, same thick skin, but boy does it pack a flavor wallop! Really nice and tangy. This one floored me to be honest. I took a flyer on this tomato having enjoyed other Japanese hybrids. I will have to keep an open slot for this one moving forward. Winner, winner bruschetta dinner!

Hope I can find it next year. Does it have an acidic flavor?

Hi, Mrs G! This one has tomato flavor in spades, not as sweet as ‘Sungold’ and very tangy.

Perfect! Hope I can find it! I like sungold because it surprises my friends with its sweetness. I love tangy tomatoes, but haven’t heard of many! Your music is great!

It’s actually a great compliment to ‘Sungold’ sweetness. I have both growing this year and they make for a winning combo.

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate you giving my music a listen.

I sent you an IM.

I’m trying a “Honeycomb” cherry tomato this year, the picture looks a lot like Sungold.

Is it as hardy as Juliet? Juliet takes our hot dry summers very well.

So far it’s holding up really well here in So Cal. We haven’t hit the dog days yet, so heat hardiness is still TBD. All tomato plants here will look pretty crispy by the end of September. To be honest heat hardiness has never been a consideration for me, I’m all in for flavor and production. Everything gets yanked when the heat and spider mites converge.

‘Juliet’ has been a good producer for me in the past, the flavor and production are good as well. I would say that if you are happy with it, you should stick with it. So far ‘Aiko’ beats it hands down in the flavor department. I’m even willing to put taste ahead of production. YMMV.
