I have this apricot for 5+ years total. Got a total of 25 apricots from it in 5 years. So I’m looking to stump this tree. It has 3 main branches with each branch about 2.5" to 3.5" in diameter. I will stump 2 of the 3 main branches and graft something else. Is mid summer a good time to do bark graft? What type of graft give the best chance in mid summer? The tree is currently gold kist on unknown rootstock (probably citation). San Diego area.
Im not sure about what graft is most succesfull since i graft only early spring. Yet i do think to know what scion-wood u need to use in summer, i believe you will need to take scions from the parts where to wood is changing from brown to green.
This growing bud is ‘Twocot,’ with the t-budding occurring on 29 May. I will attempt to keep it growing vigorously as long as possible.
The technique is also called ‘June-budding,’ with the propagation season usually being May and June, so you are still within the general timeframe. When rootstocks are budded sooner in the growing season they will typically get larger calipers, bringing better tree prices.
What was the reason for the poor performance. Did it flower and not set? Did you give it potassium and phosphorus at bloom and in the fall. Anything else near by to pollinate it?
