Do tree farms let their bigger trees produce fruit or do they strip them of fruit to concentrate on tree growth?
Whar do you mean by tree farm? A lumber farm typically doesn’t use trees that fruit in a way that it is feasible to remove the fruit. A nursery (like growing trees to sell) wouldn’t really want faster growth after a certain point because it is hard to move really big trees. Orchards and groves might thin their younger trees, but the older bigger trees are typically the producers.
I think they do the formula of sticking a tiny whip into a 3 gallon pot and selling that ‘tree’ on year 2. Most folks would balk at buying a tiny bare root whip from a box store… they want ‘trees’. Or ‘Fast Growing Trees’.
I have investigated many of those pots and most are very heavy on the pine bark…sparing on the potting mix and a handful of fertilizer. Which is basically what im doing now with my bare roots… but im going with 50/50 pine bark and pro mix…
Their growing areas are devoid of any shade and get lots and lots of sun hours… so a great place to have open fields of pots for rapid growing.
