I have always wrapped the trunks of my baby fruit trees in their early years, but did not do so last year and look at the damage that was done to the trunk in just one growing season. I am in central Kentucky. Any idea what could have done this???
It doesn’t look like sun injury with the green stuff on the bark, that appears only on shaded spots. It also doesn’t look like the pattern of borers or canker to me. One guess is a late cold spell split the bark. Another guess is something damaged the tree. But it’s a mystery to me really.
