Type 1 Pecan Variety for Zone 9B California

My neighbor’s pecan tree provided over the years many free pecans that birds or wind brought over the fence and two pecan seedlings made it before it was cut down. Now they started to fruit, but the fruit seems to either not pollinate well or some kind of disease. Wanting to enhance the fruit quality, after doing some research on good varieties, I ordered Elliot and Kanza scions. As soon as I received them, I learned that they are both type 2 and need a pollinator and their suggested pollinator Pawnee takes a long time to fruit and has some problems. I’m like at level zero on pecans, can anyone suggest other possible pollinators that are disease resistant, good quality and early bearers? Thanks!

Zone 9 makes it tough. Creek, Jackson, and Western Schley are probably the best alternatives. If you are in a dry climate, Western Schley would be a good choice. Creek is scab resistant, very productive, and probably the best choice of the three. Jackson tends to be a light bearer which makes it a very good yard tree.

Thank you, I think Creek is what I’m looking for, and for Type 2, will Elliot and Kanza be ok? do you recommend any other ones? @Fusion_power Thanks

Elliott is a good choice for your general climate but is a small nut. I’ve cracked a LOT of Elliott nuts and love them. Kanza is arguably better adapted further north, also a small nut.

Your season should be long enough to grow most of the large type 2 pecans. Avalon, Forkert, and Lakota would be good possibilities. Avalon is still under patent so you would need to get a tree.

so I am set for this year I think, unless some of my grafts don’t take. Went with Kanza, Elliot, Creek and Lakota. Especial Thanks to Darrel Jones @Fusion_power you saved me years of try and fail options, I know I still need to try them on my local climate, but I feel very confident about them.

@Fusion_power Hi Darrel, do you have Creek, Lakota and Kanza Scion wood available this year? Only My Elliot and Pawnee Grafts took last year. I rather buy or trade from you than online because they require 5 scions of each variety and I only need one or two of each variety. Let me Know, Thanks

I have 2 sticks of Kanza and 2 sticks of Lakota in the refrigerator. Want me to ship them?
