Update: Siam Jumbo mulberry: cutting to huge fruit in 5 months

Yep, I’m in the same boat.

I’ve got about 20 plants of SJ started. I’ll probably sell those on figbid starting in a month or two. As soon as they root out enough to ship. Or can supply cuttings when I get enough growth to start harvesting some. I’ll have a lot of cuttings next winter.

I got mine from Marta at reallygoodplants.com but its not currently showing available. She must have sold out for now.

I’m pretty sure those who have Siam cuttings will be king of the trading season next fall. I’m hoping to eventually get my grubby paws on some too. Really need to focus on what I’ve already got for this spring though. I’m already running out of space for cuttings. Gonna need to build another house just for starting plants. Wife is already telling me I need my own fridge.

They’re the new figs! Surely this proves their relation to each other.

Supposed to get down to 30 tonight, and I do not plan on protecting it.

The Siam Jumbo is loaded with ripening fruit. And after tipping the second growth spurt is setting fruit. I ate the first ripe fruit yesterday. It was a sweet treat.

The tree was without ripe fruit for right at 60 days. So that equates to 10 months of continuous fruiting given the conditions in my greenhouse. Last year it was 11 months. But I finished chill cycle way early in the 23-24 winter.

If you end up cutting lignified sections, can i bug you for some cuttings?

I have 1 left and its struggling right now :sob: hoping it comes back from gnat attack

There is no lignified wood to cut at this point. It’s all tipping to stimulate new buds to produce fruit. Later in the season I may have some. I think I’ll likely try a major pruning mid-season so as to have part of the tree on a different schedule and hold down tree size.

My rooted cuttings will be ready to ship before too long. There are about 14 pots with cuttings started. I’m just waiting for them to fill the pot with roots. Then they’ll be ready to ship. I don’t like shipping plants with weak roots.

From yesterday…still not out of the woods yet.

Still might get another freeze/frosy event here, but so far so good.

Supposed to get down to 27 degrees tonight, we’ll see how they respond.

I have some feral hybrids in my yard at about the same stage of growth, but I doubt it will set them back much. Possibly no fruit but otherwise I think they’ll be ok. It’ll be interesting to see how Siam Jumbo/Austurkey responds to being zapped at this stage.

Let us know how it does. Depending on the amount of damage some pruning might help. At least at some point after recovery, pruning/tipping should set more fruit if this crop is wiped out.

Monday night didn’t end up getting any frost but the leaves seemed to not like the cold. Feral seedlings nearby seemed about the same level of damage.

Last night/this morning we definitely had some frost and seems like theres a little more damage but I don’t think its major.
Hopefully the frosts/freezes are behind us at this point.

That looks pretty good. I think you still have the first crop of fruit intact.

It looks like my Siam graft is also a success. Now have 2 trees, one grafted and another rooted. A third one has a lot of roots but seems to have no live buds.

I looked for this one and couldn’t find it. Does anyone have a current source for it?

Reallygoodplants.com might have to wait till next winter when she collects scion. I grafted mine but allegedly roots very easily from cuttings.

I’ve got plants big enough to ship. If anyone is interested PM me. JFYI Peaceful Heritage Nursery wants $50 for this size of mulberry plant. So that’s what I’m going to ask. I can ship on Monday via USPS priority mail shipping cost included.
