Upper Midwest Growers

We’ve had less than an inch since the snow melted.

I’m hoping for a bunch today through the weekend, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

after 4 days of dry we’re back into rain tom. and rain for 6 days after. 60 to 90% chances with at least 2in. predicted in the 1st 2 days. got my sprays in this morning. lots of pests in them. grass is growing so fast i have to do it every 3 days. in between the potato rows in farmers fields still has standing water in the low spots. wish i could send some back west for you guys.

Apricots are starting to color. Seems like they should be bigger. Hopefully they plump up some. This is a seedling so who knows.

just put in a scout apricot in May and i grafted brookcot and Manchurian apricot on it as well. it may set fruit next year as its good sized and growing well.

Finally real rain. Places nearby have some flooding. I had some nects drop - all shriveled, probably from lack of moisture. They seem to be more drought-sensitive than the other fruits.

This is when I should be picking cherries. No fruits this year to crack.

Lucky. Dry and back in a drought up here in MN.

I was out doing some work in the woods yesterday. I stopped to take a pic of a couple top works from this spring. Both are on wild crabs. I did them both right around 5-6’, hoping to avoid deer browse. I’m also hoping that grafting higher gives them better winter hardiness. Both get more sun that it looks like in the pics, but I will also be opening up around them more in the future.

Early Gold pear has a nice crop, but the tree is drought stressed. I hope the fruit doesn’t all drop.

Forget what is its name, but it is a heavy and reliable producer. The J. Plum is coloring up

Altai Mountain crab has a decent crop this year. This tree is on heavy ground is not showing any drought stress.

Roadedge wild apple has a few fruit this year. They are showing more red coloration than any year previously. I’m not sure if that’s due to the drought, a lot of sunny days, or something else.

Dolgo crab is loaded this year after having only a handful of fruit last year. I should have thinned this tree as limb breakage is possible. Dolgo is worthless for fresh eating IMO, so the deer get to eat most of them.

Satsuma? I have a few plums/pluots this year that have never fruited and were seed grown so i have zero idea how they will turn out. My son and I ate the apricots (about 8 of them) the other day. They were small, but good. I was hoping they’d size up some, but they really didn’t.

This is one of those named pluots… Sizing up good now with the rain/heat.

Look nice!
Not satsuma, but a really reliable and tasty red meat J plum. Tag was lost so did satsuma. I can’t reliablely identify satsuma. Grafted branch is among one of many grafted branches.

I ran to town to get some 3’ bamboo stakes yesterday. Some of the mulberry grafts I did earlier this year broke off recently. I’m trying to prevent the rest of them from breaking off. I attached a couple stakes per limb, then tied twine around the stakes and grafts. I hope it works. Some of the Kokosu grafts are over 3’ long.

You can kind of see on the right two branches where the grafts broke off. There’s still some life on those branches, so there’s hope. These are/were Northrup.

A line of storms went through last night with strong winds. There was heavy rain and hail in the area. We got a light shot of rain, no hail, but good wind. I’ll find out later today if the mulberry grafts made it through.

edited to add…no breakage after last night’s wind. Hope they continue to hold up.

looks like things are greening up for you.

The mulberry is growing on the edge of what is usually a wetland. No standing water in there this year.

Dolgo is not worthless for eating fresh. If you catch them at their peak they are great. In high school we would stuff our pockets with them.

That would be your opinion. Just as mine is dolgo is worthless for fresh eating

Picked my onions. Next year i’m putting down thick mat to suppress weeds. Mine were horrible. I’ve picked maybe 2 ripe tomatoes. I really need to start them early and get my greenhouse (high tunnel) put up next spring to try to get them faster. My kids eat a lot of salsa and i’m still buying store tomatoes :frowning:

This is a Dolgo seedling planted in 2015. I grafted a number of trees on Dolgo rootstock that year, and had two rootstocks that were too small to graft. I decided to plant them out and see what becomes of them. Largely to find out if Dolgo is “true to seed.” The second seedling has a couple fruit for the first time this year. Neither resemble a grafted Dolgo closely.

Figured I’d show you what the non-wetland looks like. The first pic is looking up the side hill from the mulberry. The second pic has an arrow pointing to the mulberry. These pics show parts of one of my smaller orchards. I haven’t mowed in about a month.
