I wonder how long they can just sit at one stage before they just give up. No real warm air until next weekend.
It’s the up and down temperature kills the flower buds
I’m seeing the empty scars where they’ve dropped off.
I noticed my apricot dropped many flower buds. My thought was some birds pecked them initially. Peaches seem just sit there, didn’t make progress at all.
Are the peaches the ones that have leaf bud in the middle surrounded flower bud at each side? If that is the case, my peaches also dropped the flower buds. The leaves are unfurled, but the little buds at the sides dried up. What a bummer! How common is that here in the Midwest in your experience?
Same here. You’d think with being warmer it be better for them, seeing how well they do in the south. Must be the up and down that does them in.
This is when “upper” becomes an issue…
We were in southern MN yesterday (3.5 hours south). Grass was greening up and cottonwood trees were budding out. Meanwhile, there’s 5-6" of snow on the ground here still and we’re a long ways from any fruit trees being close to budding out (thankfully to be honest)
Yeah, that’s what they look like. The scars are green and fresh, they obviously just dropped
Voles, deer, rabbits, what pest they can be when we are trying to grow some trees.
I would hazard a guess that with that much leaf growth your peaches should be in full bloom. Bummer.
My peaches, too, are a bust this year. (Z5 Iowa)
I’m in southeast Michigan 6b originally 5b. I have had blooms April 1st and all was fine. It’s going to be later this year. I don’t see temps getting low enough to cause any problem. Slightly below freezing is not a problem. Sorry to hear others expect loses. In the last 11 years we had only one year where all fruit was lost. I’m pretty happy with that. I think that was the winter of 2015-16. I have had fruit every year since then.
Year before last, I had so many nects I was thinning bucketsfull.
I have couple of hybrid plums in full bloom here in SW Iowa, and a several others showing white tips. Problem is I’m just not seeing any pollinators out yet. Hopefully we get a few warm sunny days and they get going soon.
Did you have a freeze in your area last night? How did your blooms do? Apples’ seem healthy, at least in central Illinois.
Southern Michigan, and the apricot blossoms are looking good so far. There are dozens of mason bees on the trees right now and several butterflies.
Shucks. Looks like I’m gonna get zero peaches from my four trees this year too. Last year was really good. Not sure if it was the record highs in February or the cold snap.
Mine are at popcorn right now in southwest WI.
Planted about 300 onion plants today. My back.
And tomorrow the leg muscles will be sore.
Again, you make me envious and jealous
Have you tried Polly White Peach? It’s an Iowa variety. It’s a little hardier and blooms later. Does pretty well here on the western side of the state
