I bought a canister of preen to apply under my currants, raspberries, grapes and flower beds to prevent summer weed germination. But before applying I decided to read more about it and found that it is also nitrogen source with 10% of nitrogen by weight. The idea to apply it once a month to prevent germination doesn’t look so good when I think about excessive grows on my berry-bushes and lush foliage instead of flowers. Did you use it, if yes, where, when and how often? Did you get good results?
I feed my raspberries monthly anyway. I like organics, seems like more bang for your buck to me. Although corn gluten meal will stop after years of use about 30% of the weeds. I thought Preen was NOT corn gluten meal.but a chemical pre-emergegent.
And why do they call it gluten meal, when no gluten is in corn?
The one I have is Organic for vegetable garden, here is the label:
And this s from Wiki:
Corn gluten meal (CGM) is a byproduct of corn (maize) processing that has historically been used as an animal feed. It can also be used as an organic herbicide.
The word gluten here is inexact; there is no true gluten in corn, but simply corn proteins. The expression “corn gluten” is colloquial jargon that describes corn proteins that are neither gliadin nor glutenin. Only wheat, barley, and rye contain true gluten, which is formed by the interaction of gliadin and glutenin proteins.
May I ask why you feed your raspberries monthly? I usually fertilize with 10-10-10 once in spring, I have two crops a year, and I have to remove last year canes in July when first crop is over, otherwise it will be solid green mass with all the new 6-ft canes coming up, and not only where they should, but where I can’t let them grow. I can’t imaging what a raspberries forest I would have if I fertilize more.
Last year I sprinkled Preen around my Jujube tree after mulching around it. Then the tree just stopped growing. Didn’t die but didn’t grow. I don’t know if this is a coincidence or if Preen actually stunt growth. Has anybody noticed this with Preen?
If that’s the case I’d rather let weed seeds germinate and then hand pull them than give up a year of growth on trees.
I use it on my strawberry bed
