In the decade or so since I put in my vegetable garden, the trees around my yard keep growing taller. It’s to the point where most stuff (except greens) isn’t doing well except for one corner that gets more sun.
So what should I do now?
More hardy kiwi? Grapes? Bush cherries? Raspberries? Bush cherries? Haskaps?
I have gooseberries and blackberries on the slightly sunnier side doing very well (not that the birds leave me much). I’ve been experimenting with some perennial vegetables like Good King Henry, Sea Kale, and Hablitzia.
Interested to read what people with more than my few years of experience have to say. Will just say that I have raspberry, aronia, elderberry, and one currant growing in about 4-5 hours afternoon sun and doing great. Plants are 0-3 years old but all fruit (the currant grew 3+ feet and fruited planted in March that’s the zero). I’m going to remove the gross currant and put a different currant and gooseberry in its place. The elderberries on the other side of my house get less than 4 hours of morning sun and do well.
Most herbs will do great around your part shade vegetable garden.
I have golden currants in my tree row that are bird-planted. Full shade and they are very happy. Come to think of it, maybe I should graft those over to edible currants if that’s possible.
