What did you eat today - that you grew?

Melons, figs, pears, tomatoes, garlic, frozen paw paws. Waiting till citrus, long wait. December?

Banana muskmelon is my favorite.
There used to be one called ā€œGurney’s Giantā€ or something like that that I
became fond of. Never did like Hale’s Best.

I ate 3/4 of this 4.5lb watermelon. I think its Mini Love variety. Also have been eating 15 or so Green Gages and several mirabelles each day for the past week and half or so.

Also had my first properly ripened Shipova, which was really good. It’s one of 3 on my graft to aronia that fruited for the first time this year. There’s one left. The first fruit was past ripe, mealy, and flavorless.

And ate 3/4 of a yellow pattypan squash in some Tonkotsu ramen. I really got my money’s worth from these squash this year.

My wife bakes kale ā€œchipsā€ in the oven. Oil, pepper and salt make a world of difference to kale palatability for me. Just make sure you don’t burn it, easy to do.

Glad you mention it. I was going to ask you about shipova. How big it gets? Do you have picture of your shipova?

I have one fruit left. I forgot to take a picture of the good one I ate.

Are you asking about the fruit or the ā€œtreeā€. I put ā€œtreeā€ in quotes, because its grafted to aronia berry bush and is only 6 feet tall or so, with a huge mismatch at the graft union.

A friend got her first harvest, and pretty good size, posted on Facebook a good picture of a bunch of fruit.

I am more focused on individual size of shipova. If you can estimate its size in inches/cm or weight that would be great
I’ve read there is a pear in Liaoning Provence in China matches the description of shipova but that pear is very small and it was said a native seeding in China. I am wondering if it was a mislabeled shipova as this was hybrid in eastern Europe. That pear is about 4.7—5.2cm high , 5.5—5.8 cross怂average 50—75gram

Before I read your size estimates my guess is 2-2.5 inches in diameter. So that’s around 5-6 CM. Those estimates sound right.
I should add, the pears fruiting on same aronia are tiny, smaller than I’d expected.

90 grams

Strange thing. I had exactly 3 fruit this year, my first. And the ripeness of the three fruit I picked had an inverse correlation to when I picked it. The last picked was the least ripe.

It was fine, and good enough I would have been encouraged about the future. The first one was mealy and flavorless, and offered no encouragement at all. The middle one was really good, sweet and rich - firm smooth flesh. Like I might imagine a really good D’Anjou would be (I don’t usually eat that variety).

i have the same tree i got from Cricket hill in CT. how long was it before you got fruit? mines 4ft. tall and 2nd year in ground. it has grown slowly for me in a 12in. raised bed.

I grafted 3 or 4 years ago, but it was to aronia, which affects vigor and precocity. Probably a lot.

Okra, green beans, tomato, grapes, figs…

Good eats.

mine came already grafted to aronia.

I see, mine was already well established, and grew pretty well. Getting a new tree established, especially low vigor, takes some time for me.

I’d usually rather have a fully established tree and a scion, than a transplanted commercial tree of the variety I want.

Tried my sun crisp apple. Seeds are black crisp but not very juicy. Also looked like some kind of corkage in top left of apple maybe I didn’t give them enough water in our 100 degree days. The cosmic crisp in same row no corkage but not very juicy too.

This year I’m really discovering beets for salads, especially mixed salads. They are easy to grow and fast to process. I really like them grated (but uncooked) together with aragula and other leafy greens.

Beet salad looks colorful and appetizing. Doesn’t raw beet contain some chemical that is not good for health? I read some where.
