Sometimes you know you are fortunate. Wow! These were grown by a guy down the road from me! They are wonderful!

No maters here. Way too hot this year. Even the ones in the shade failed to thrive.

It was a hot year in general. Things are roasted alive or sweet as candy.
Way too wet, I finally gave up on keeping weeds out of the garden. Still had very good production but the high temps and humidity caused foliage diseases that cut tomato production short. Watermelons, cucumbers, corn, beans, and just about everything else produced abundantly. I’ve never seen watermelon vines as rampant as they grew this year. I planted 7 hills and they covered an area about 70 feet wide by 100 feet long.

Yes our squash grew monstrously. Though our eggplant literally dried up. Our runner beans are struggling hard. The Carolina Black peanuts love the heat.

My squash and watermelon also grew extremely well in Western NY. Some of my butternut vines are about 35 feet long. Squash vine borers are out of control too, even got some in my butternuts

I grew some bushel gourds that have runners I stepped off at 45 feet long. They are monsters. Unfortunately, they are just now setting fruit so I don’t know if they will be mature before it gets cold.

There’s a sort of relief that I got everything in that I wanted, but there’s also that realization that August is almost over and the tomatoes have only now just hit a decent production. It’s been a really late year for me.
The upside is that somehow I managed to get a better start this year preparing for winter. There’s still more things to do as the days wind down for my list to be ‘complete’. But I am pretty happy I got going my third attempt at growing European brassicas all the way to seed. The weather lately has been quite mild so they and the lettuce transplants are doing well. A bed of spinach also self-sowed, this is the first year that’s happened to me.

It’s opposite land here with my tomatoes, up until today I had been harvesting my cherries early because the constant wetness kept causing early splitting. It’s not the worst I’ve had for sure, but not great. It’s also been mild here, highs are 75-85 degrees.
Being able to be sweet in wet weather is being baked into my breeding projects these last two years.
