What kind of damage is this? (Crimson crisp apple)

Received my order of trees from Cummins nursery. I thought they all looked pretty good (in my non expert opinion). However my crimson crisp tree has this damage on it. How concerned should I be with it? Is it just physical damage to the trunk? Sun damage? Disease? Seems to have been growing fine as it’s probably halfway up the leader and it was feathered nicely.

Could it have been a branch was ripped off there?

In any event I don’t think it’s going to be a problem for you. Nice looking tree, with nice branch angles and good spacing.

Maybe, I’m not sure. There’s actually a similar wound on the other side of the leader around the same height as that one. I will probably just watch for it to wake up from dormancy and hope that it grows fine.

Ripped off branches, for sure. And tree is healing nicely, wounds are almost closed, so no worries.
