I ran across these three persimmon trees. I’m curious if there’s a way to determine their type. Took pictures of trees, bark, leaves and green fruit. As you can see in first picture they have seeds. Thanks
Did you take a bite? That couldn’t have been very pleasant.
No, they were hard as rocks. Interior still white.
The homeowner doesn’t know?
Likely just seedings; they appear to be fairly old…prob well over 20 yrs…
As Lucky says, likely seedlings. If in Pennsylvania, they are probably 90 chromosome.
I’m thinking they may be seedlings also but i can’t help wondering why would anyone plant three of them in s row. If they not tasty.
Linearity may be a function of mowing.
In my orchard addition…pecans, and later persimmons, were initially planted in rows, at designated spacings. I only mow once or twice yearly. Persimm root suckers have popped up prolifically, but only those ‘in-line’ with the originals escape the bush-hog; hence, they are, in some areas, MUCH closer together than the initial 40 ft spacings.
Most fruiting D.virginia are tasty, whether cultivars or random seedlings.
