What's happening today 2016?

Yeah, that was a bonus. I didn’t know Tropic Snow had bright pink flowers.

I have two mature peach trees. One makes tiny flowers and good peaches and the other makes beautiful flowers and the peaches rot. Oh well, such is life. I plan to put some contender on the one with nice flowers this spring.

I don’t think the type of flowers, showy or non showy have no bearing on the quality of the fruit.

Roller coaster Winter so far. It is 50 degrees today and a new front coming in on Tuesday with a blizzard conditions around 12" of snow. Go figure. Can’t wait until Spring!!!

i agree, although it is so much better if the flowers are just as desirable as the fruit. Red baron is one such

if only peaches live long enough–and not always ‘under siege’…

same here Tony.

“Hope springs eternal” people say all the time, well i sure hope spring IS eternal !

not much going on around here either, where we’ll be dipping into the 30’s again soon, just when we’ve warmed up enough.
our friendly hummers won’t be needing a bath soon after today…

Looked at the Orchard for the first time in a while. I’m a little worried. It seems the buds are swelling.
It’s Jan! Ack! and 50 degrees

I looked for some good scion wood and was disappointed as well. I think that I may have runted most of my Bud9s. Any new growth from last year is little and only 6 inches long. Oh Well.

I have tons of Red and Yellow delicious that I’ll have to practice with. They had 3 ft of new growth stuff.
I can pick any diameter that I want.

Hey, thanks! I tried and I did OK. Some of the bigger ones that I tried had tough wood but overall I got it.

I was enamored of Red Baron with the first picture I ever saw of its blooms. I hope to one day be able to be able to view them from my own window.

quite attractive right? Perhaps the most intense colors among drupe blossoms, hands-down.

i see you’re in 8a and surmise not in nevada, so could predict you’re in much better shape to grow it where you’re at. Anywhere than here is more favorable imho, haha

Yes, I’m in peach country. You’d think there would be at least one Red Baron on every block. No. It’s house after house with a stinky Bradford pear in the front yard.

lol!
incidentally, quite sure we obtained ours from either home depot or lowes as potted specimens(considering that nurseries here are so drab and pedestrian), so there’s a good chance will be readily available there too.

The forecast said we would have 4-8" of snow yesterday. They were wrong (again). We got 12". I have proof :)smile:

Mamuang,

Hang in there because March is around the corner. We got a blizzard on Monday and the Omaha kind off shut down until Wednesday. The temperature will be in the mid 40’s today and hopefully half of the snow will melted. Look on a bright side, I am drinking coffee right now and read this awesome GF forum in front of my hot pepper plant and feed the fish.

Tony,
This is the first winter that I did not kill my chili plant indoor. It even reblooms abd produces for me.

Mine is tall and lanky, not compact like yours but , hey, it’s not dead :)grin:

the leaves of that type of chili is good for garlic broth. It is also one of the few in the tomato family which tolerate shade and still continue to bear some fruits, and could live much longer than tomatoes, often more than 2 years. Most tomatoes, chili’s, eggplants, and potatoes may survive some light-deprivation, but won’t be productive or simply die outright.

Juju,
We eat leaves of a lot of plants including what others consider weeds (not that kind of weed) but I’ve not seen any Thai friends eat chili leaves.

it actually has a pleasant spinach taste to it. Mildly nutty-bitter. It is also nutritious like spinach, loaded with beta carotene and other nutrients. It is often sold frozen in asian supermarkets.
Unlike spinach though, it is not served as fresh salad greens.
when cooked in garlic broth(say, fish/chicken), i often hoard them together and eat 'em

It’s on days like these I feel so lucky to live in California. It’s Feb. 6, sunny, 65 F, and I’m reading the GF forum on my patio. And if you’re missing the snow, the Sierra is just a two-hour drive away.
