Now I have to apologize for complaining about 80F seems like some of you have to work outside in much hotter temps. than that. Sorry folks
No need to apologize if 80 feels hot to you. I start complaining to the people around me when winter temps start tickling the 30’s. It all depends on what your body is acclimated to.
I forgot to say that I have some cute little teeny-tiny little mangoes in my ice cream mango, which did a second flowering. I want to remember to take a pic of them tomorrow if they haven’t disappeared. Who knew that Japanese beetles liked to munch on mango flowers?
Also, my largest papaya is now making lots of flower buds and growing like gangbusters. 21 of the 22 citrus trees are now carrying fruit and/or blooming. Wouldn’t it be an odd twist of fate if my out-of-zone fruits out performed the more zone appropriate ones?
This is 2nd planting cauliflower - the first planting got frostburned and turned out pretty small heads. So the first batch was too early and the 2nd too late
I always get fall lettuce in but other crops are problematic for various reasons. I always try fall peas, they always fail in germination. I’ve never started peas inside but I may try that
This climate change thing requires a grower to adapt
I’ve read to start stuff inside for fall planting or else some seeds won’t germinate (too hot). I think my basement would work (stays around 70F down there all summer).
3/4 inch of rain with strong thunderstorms (little bit of hail). I see a few fruit on the ground, but nothing else damaged. The Lapins sweet cherry that has turned (some are dark red/ripe)-- didn’t see any cracking, so i’m surprised at that. I thought they would have all exploded. A lot of curculio in the cherries since i never sprayed it with anything. The birds are getting those.
It’d be nice to make a deal with the birds to take the cherries with the curcs and leave the rest
Spent the last couple of days hilling up dirt and putting straw mulch around my tomato plants. I transplanted 70 of them into the garden last week, and almost on cue, the day after the last plant went into the ground, we had a bad storm blow thru. Got about a 1/2 inch of rain in the morning, no big deal, but that afternoon, a squall line came thru with 40+ winds and sideways rain. It was bad enough to knock the power off to our area for 7 hours.
I thought the garden would be tore up, but to my surprise, just 3 plants were blown over. But a lot of them were under water, so I had to drain those, and dig another drainage ditch. The plants were looking rough, so I hilled them up and finished mulching them last night. Started before noon and got done about 7:00. I was wiped after all that work, I let the wife water them afterwards.
Next year it’s going to be no more than 30 plants, I don’t know why I had to put out that many this year, guess I got carried away buying seeds this winter.
Thankfully, it was cloudy and maybe 80 yesterday, so it wasn’t too bad. But today they’re saying about 92 and sunny, so glad to get that done already. Plus all next week it’s supposed to be in the 80’s. And to think last month was cool and rainy, we even had a freeze on 16 May!
The summer heat here is tolerable, as opposed to what we dealt with in Texas. Summers there from June to September were miserably hot, and nothing would hardly grow in that heat, so this is not so bad.
Well, the snacking helped to off set the heavy labor, Muddy. Yumm!
Sam’s club is selling a plumcot…box says “Eagle Egg”////
http://familytreefarms.com/products/plumcots/
If this thing has apricot in it, i’m not finding it. Very plum like.
I bought some too. No apricot flavor but they do have a meaty texture of a pluot. In my store they sold the eagle egg plumcots in a bah for $5.99. Right next to them they were selling ”eagle egg pluots” in a clam pack for $6.99. I even checked the box to verify. They were charging an extra dollar for the oluot name. Not real sure what variety this might equate to but it was dark red skin with bright red flesh.
Heres’ my first pick of the season. Mostly Galaxy peaches, May Pride, Flavor Delight Apriums, a few Arctic Star nectarines, a couple of Golden Dorsett apples (that got knocked off as we walked by), and a couple of Burgundy plums.
'Bout ready to bust out my lovely Mauviel copper jam pan!!
Patty S.
My family ate burgundy plums, beauty plums, santa rosa plums, geo-pride pluots, and splash pluots today. All tasty but the splash was awesome, definitely the best of the bunch.
Envious of copper jam pan - what size is it?
You go girl. They are beautifulllll!
Thanks, mrsg! I may be tapping you for some perserving tips. I haven’t put up preserves in like 30 years, no kidding, lol! Those Galaxy peentos are like candy, unbelievably sweet.
Patty
I have two, 11 qt. and a smaller 5.3 qt. pan. Love them.
Picked bluieberries. Pulled garlic (our years supply plus seed for next year). We’ve had 5 days without rain, so things are drying out nicely.
You don’t wait until the tops start dying back, Anne? It does look good! And plentiful, too!
Mine is dying back and it’s time to harvest it. It managed to grow a few weeks longer than last year. I tried to pull one to check on them yesterday and found that was not going to happen. Short of using a chisel to extract them, I’ll have to take a trowel to work them loose. They do look like they grew well this year, though.
Patty, that’s a lovely assortment to collect at one time. It looks like the Galaxy peaches are producing very well this year!
If you have too much to eat, I’ll volunteer to take care of the cots for you.
I added Galaxy this year. Its growing nicely and hope to have a crop next year. Looking forward to big donuts.
My garlic isn’t there yet… I’m going to give away a ton because i have a lot.
