The produce here all looks perfect and tastes really good (except for the apples and pears). Since many of them are used in cooking they don’t care about outward appearance. This is interesting though, see what they do to the tips of their pears to keep them fresh.
This California “winter” has been over for weeks.
My Royal Lee cherry, Minnie Royal cherry, Methley plum, and Burgundy plum have all been in bloom for 5-8 days…and it’s not even March.
We had about six inches of snow yesterday and today it’s 20 - 30 mph winds gusting to 40 mph. Wind chills in the single digits.
9-13in today into tonight. wind gusts to 45mph!
I pruned my Anjou and Bartlett Pear trees yesterday. These are pictures of a Bartlett…going into their 10th growing season.
These have been a pain over the years to get lateral branches growing out instead of up. Lots of fruiting spurs though.
That’s a pear for you! What rootstock is it on?
@johnhwood Same here in VA. Ridiculous.
These are the 2 lovely little pear trees that I found at Southern States this past week.
An Anjou and a Bartlett - just like @maineorchard. And I was thinking that when looking at them . . . most branches were growing ‘up’ . . . but a few were at a nice right angle.
@mrsg47 Dear Mrs. Gibson. You can keep those beautiful berries . . . just send us the baguettes.
Received a refund from Womack’s for the AU Rubrum that was a no show. I’m wondering if I should plant out the Ozark Premier and AU Cherry that they substituted or just give them away. I don’t know too much about these two plums and whether they’re worth the space.
No kidding.
Robins are back! Saw the first one yesterday, two more today. We’re told to expect 55 F this afternoon. I may stick a ladder in the snow and prune my apple today.
My Methley plum tree has been blooming for a few days. Have not finished pruning it. Too early spring.
Those are great looking trees!
Good question! I’m not sure …I got them from Fedco & they are standard size.
I want to get a Maria de bouis, or whatever it is spelled, and Marshall strawberries. I like very sweet, soft is fine. But slugs…how to control them?
My Methley doing the same thing. And the Satsuma next to it. Probably lose every one to a frost before April’s over.
i have these. if you want some runners remind me in june. i use coarse D.E around my plants. it doesn’t wash away like the powder does.
Sluggo! ie, Iron Phosphate. Some products contain other ingredients, which might harm other organisms.
Does course DE really control slugs for you? I am just learning about the course DE being available, after reading through some of the ‘make your own potting mix’ posts. I didn’t know it existed! I was going to purchase a bag of floor dry at Napa for potting mix. I will try it around my rhubarb this spring. Powdered stuff doesn’t last long, and doesn’t protect them.
