@growjimgrow How do your flower buds look after the cold weather?
Looks like there wasn’t frost on the ground even though we had below freezing temps for 2 nights last week (around 27 degrees both nights). A few of my Asian pear buds look bruised, and some of a Glenglo peach too. My Intrepid peach looks completely undamaged along with the Japanese plums that started blooming. Some pawpaw flower buds look like they got hit again this year. My figs, persimmons, and jujubes are dormant enough to look unaffected by the freeze.
All my potted figs got moved outside today to enjoy the warmer weather. There are plenty of breba forming this year despite heavy pruning to share cuttings.
My Satsuma plum looks decent and kept opening more flowers after the freeze. The centers look good and they smelled so sweet. The solitary bees approved and had a party on it.
My pear buds are out but not open. So they probably did just fine. I have satsuma and lavina in bloom. They look alright to me so far. Didn’t pull them to see if they come off easily. Dont want to lose flowers if they are ok.they don’t look brown. So hopefully fine.
I seemed to do fine. The “weather app” on my phone forecasted a low of 28. When I woke up it said the temp was 23. When I went outside it didn’t feel that cold, but its hard to tell.
As far as I can tell, nothing was damaged, including Tomcot, Methley and Nanking cherry, all of which had flowers. The pears seem okay in their tight cluster.
I did have a little damage to the dino kale I planted out two weeks ago, but that will bounce back.
Thanks! The HotHands I’m convinced we’re useless the way I utilized them.
Looks like maybe 25% flower loss, so definitely nothing too bad. Though my Shenandoah I think is 100% loss - weird! Something was going on with it this year - not many flowers and just seems off.
It’s one of my England’s trees, of which all the rest have died.
Can I hi-jack this to ask you which plum pollinates your spring satin? I planned methley and spring satin and have these two coming but I’m actually nervous about weather I didn’t plan it right! Thanks
Trying the sprinkler method of fighting frost damage seems to have worked. Just remember to empty out the hose each day, or else it might freeze solid before the sprinkler turns on again that night.
The cherries, pear, and apples are in bloom now, the apricots are approaching shuck split, the plum might have some decent set, and I hope I have something on the pluot for once.
Nothing else has done much but wake up, and some things like the poms & jujubes haven’t even done that.
Oooh no😱! Reflection hanging tapes on the tree can scare the birds pretty good, at least effective in my yard. Squirrels are different stories, more destructive and harder to get rid off
I put up my trap two days ago. Last year Penn State reported their biofix on the 6th. My peaches and nectarine are about to bloom in a day or so. I don’t spray till after petal fall.
