What's Happening Today 2021

The horde of cicadas is really emerging today, and last evening.(about 30 miles north of Washington DC)

I saw a couple adults in my backyard, my puppy devoured them. I have not seen any damage to any of my tender, young plants, yet. But I do not know what to expect😬

I needed that reminder a lot! Really. Even though I have a lot of plum trees, believe it or not I have never had to thin them. So I never paid a lot of attention to how many dropped or how many I needed to keep. Sounds like I should then them a good bit less than peaches.

Again…its a nice problem to have!

Cicada mass emergence started in Ellicott City last night. I expect that it will be crazy tonight!

Beautiful. I Have been trying to grow lupines for a while.

they grow wild in ditches here. only flower i know can grow in near pure gravel. if started in a field they will quickly take over. nothing like a field of flowering lupines!

Thanks Karl! Right before I posted this I actually did some quick research and found that this particular lupine is actually not native to my area in PA, but to the western US. It is known commonly as big leaf lupine. I’m not sure what area you are in, but if you are in the eastern US you may want to check out Lupinus perennis as it apparently is better for a wider range of native species, including some very rare butterflies.

Lupinus perennis - Wikipedia

@steveb4 apparently perennis has been extirpated from it’s native range up your way in Maine :pensive:

Ironically my wife bought our first lupine from a “native plant sale” and although they are beautiful and attract hummingbirds to our house etc etc, I’d much rather have the actual native… That first plant has produced many seed babies all over the yard.

Great photos. They are one of the symbols of Provence. Ours arrive every summer once the temperatures get to 70 or higher.

We stayed in an Airbnb, where we were the hosts of a French speaking couple. Fortunately I guess it’s close enough to Catalonia, that I was able to use my functional Spanish, to improvise something of a hybrid between French and Spanish and Catalan. It was a lot of fun. They were very pleasant, and their place was spectacular…. Avenue Notre Dame du Château, 13103 Saint-Étienne-du-Grès, France

I thinned one of my fruit salad trees yesterday and it was the first time in my orchards history I truly felt like I had too much fruit on a tree. Amazing since I thought the 22 degree nights fried them last month. Now I finally understand the frustration of how laborious this task is. As you guys have said, I’m sure I didn’t remove enough fruit but I’ll reassess and perform another round in another week.

To my surprise, a later look at the nects show some fruits starting to set.

Will I get any? Will they all drop? Will the squirrels take them?
