There is wood chipping off the trunk and this weird spot on my very young persimmon tree. I planted it a couple months ago, and it seemed to be fine, but recently ive been seeing more of these spots and wood chipping off the trunk. What is going on with it and what can I do to help it?
Did something chew on it ? Bunnies? Squirrel?
I have squirrels in the area, but not sure if they chewed on it. I can see that though. Is it not some kind of infection?
Maybe it got damaged before you got it being shipped or at the nursery and now the damage is starting to be easily seen.
No it wasn’t. I’ve been keeping a good eye on it every day and these spots are new. I heard i need to expose to root flare so I think i will do that today.
This may be winter injury that occurred before you received it, and the damage took some time to manifest itself. There is callus forming, so it is trying to heal. I don’t think you can do anything but wait and see if it recovers.
I can’t tell for sure, but that first, biggest lesion looks to be 1-2 years old… looks like a nice roll of callus tissue rolling in from the edges to close over the initial defect.
