When maples produce large seed crops

Seems like a lot of the red and Freeman maples around here produced such huge seed crops the spring, that now that the seeds have dropped, it turns out the trees have very few leaves on them. Have you ever seen this?

I assume the trees will eventually leaf out correctly?

I saw similar heavy seed loads on many species of trees here last spring. They still leafed out normally, just a bit later than usual
