Was checking my supplies for this spring’s upcoming grafting and noticed I was just about out of parafilm. No biggie I thought, until I started looking on Amazon and Ebay for some. It seems both places have lots of sellers who are passing plain PVC or PE tape off as parafilm for grafting. Not the thin wax tape that I used to get as parafilm.
Just curious where folks found the real parafilm for sale, and if there was an easy way to tell if a product is parafilm or just plastic wrap.
I’ve gotten mine from Amazon but I always get the Parafilm M. The one I got in December is slightly thicker than the others I have used, but it reads exactly the same. I think it works best if it is warmed a bit by the sun or in my pocket. This slightly thicker one seems more brittle in the cold.
Ok I see I’ve bought different ones over time.
Parafilm - HS234526A M Roll, 250’ Length x 2" Width Amazon.com
Parafilm M PM992 All Purpose Laboratory Film,Semi-Transparent Amazon.com
Maybe somebody can shed some light on the difference. Both packaging looked the same.
For me, it’s gotta be the 2"x250ft roll of Parfilm-M. It’s what I learned to graft with (along with grafting/budding rubbers), and I’m very comfortable with it, though I also use - depending on the graft I’m doing - masking tape, rubberized electrical splicing tape, or good ol’ duct tape… but scions will always be wrapped with Parafilm M.
I cut off 2/3" x 6" strips for my grafting kit; that size will, most times, complete a graft.
Tried the Parafilm ‘grafting tape’ formulation one time, and did not like it.
You can get real Buddy Tape at FigBid too. Lot of people grafting prefer Buddy Tape it’s a little easier to work with. I stick with the regular stuff due to the higher cost plus I have good luck with it so why switch if it’s not broken.
I’ve bought regular 1” parafilm from the same seller and have been happy with the time I received it and my overall purchase. Buddy Tape
Thanks all. Plenty of sellers if you are careful. Sad that so many sellers use the name “parafilm” for their plain plastic wrap. Guess that is just the way it goes these days, buyer beware, in spades.
