I feel like many trendy/new varieties turn out to be a bit disappointing (most pluerries come to mind…), so I’d love to hear about ones you’ve tried that lived up to (or exceeded) expectations.
Anything’s fair game – trees, bushes, vines, etc.

So far the new thornless blackberries are doing a pretty good job
Nadia Cherry Plum has been a winner for me. Not because it’s like a huge cherry, but last year it was by far my most productive fruit tree of high quality fruit that friends were universally happy to get and eat.
In the Asian gardening groups, i saw everyone write about the Mahachanok mangos one year. People were also paying premiums for the fruit too.
3 years later, i decided to buy a box from the Florida sellers in the groups and i understand the rave lol.
Since then, I’ve started listening and researching earlier than a few years out.
I agree, although my expectations were low. Most folks I know saw thornless blackberries as a really low quality fruit, inferior in all ways to wild except lack of thorns.
Coming from that vantage point I was thrilled to learn that they can be vigorous, tasty, productive, larger fruit than wild, etc. The sweetness has been less than the best wilds, but I would say it’s a superior fruit to the “average” wild berry
Ok, just realized I may have strayed outside the “trendy” category. Sorry…but still plant thornless blackberry.
Ooh! Which zone are you in? And how would you describe the flavor?
I’d love to hear about which thornless varieties you’ve found to be the sweetest.
I don’t know how trendy it is but I’m really enjoying growing yacon.
Unfortunately the variety I have most experience with I got from a neighbor. I don’t remember if she told me the name. She died tragically last year though. I am planting a trial patch with multiple named varieties though so I should have a better answer in a couple years. Tripplecrown and Chester were planted this year, several more will go in this spring.
Zone 8. Flavor is pretty good sweet/tart japanese plum with flesh you can cut with a knife. Some years has some cherry flavor.
