White mold around trunk

I was clearing weeds away from my Hosui Asian Pear and found the entire “underground” portion covered in some sort of white fungus.

Should I be concerned? This looks pretty bad to me, but the tree seems normal above the ground. Rootstock is OHxF87.

I haven’t seen that before on such healthy stock- see it quite a bit in decaying (i.e., rotting) wood. I suspect it started in the mulch, and will disappear now that you’ve exposed it to light/circulation. That tree is surely healthy enough to outgrow it.

It looks like a slime mold to me, they decompose mulch and will spread out a slimy fruiting body on things. They aren’t harmful, the bark underneath would be fine.
