Is anyone shipping rootstock to zone 6 now. I have WAY more time in the winter than I do in the spring. I would like to graft now using a hot callus pipe in my garage.
You might try maple valley orchard. It sounds they do custom bench grafts during the winter and as long as you accept the shipping risk they might have access to their rootstock and are small enough that they might go the extra step to help you out.
If your quantity is large enough you might try someone in Oregon like treco. It’s like 50F in Dayton today so they are probably still harvesting rootstock.
I would check with Mike at 39th Parallel (@39thparallel). If he can’t help he’ll point in a good direction. He’s part of this group.
Thought I would come back and follow up just in case someone decides to do a search for this topic and reads this thread.
I contacted 39th parallel, Maple Valley, and Cummins and got the same response from all three companies. I can order now, but they do not ship until the spring.
I actually have some rootstock that I grew out myself, so I’m thinking about digging that up and giving my idea a go.
How do you order from Cummins nursery? I am confused. Call them?
I emailed them about buying now. They were pretty quick about replying. Outside of that, if you want to order, it’s pretty much just like ordering from any other company. Add stuff to your “cart” and check out. Here’s their website:
I see mounds in your future.
Mounds? What do you mean?
Oh, I guess I was mixing up Williamete and Cummins.
What are you looking for?
Many retail nurseries do not get in their rootstock orders until spring. Wholesalers generally will ship when you need it but require bulk orders. And often a nursery license.
You could search here for “Stool Bed” or “Mounding” to grow your own root stocks. Theres a lot of threads already here to read up on.
I have a MM111 apple that I’ve been air laying for my own root stocks. But this year i’m going to cut it low and mound it with saw dust. Hopefully i’ll be able to cut some root stocks out of stool bed or mound the following year.
Ohhhh, I see. Yes, I have some of these already. I am a little short on time (as always), so I was hoping to take a short cut and just order some rootstock instead of going out in the mud and harvesting.
@ammoun I’m mainly looking for pear to graft Asian pear scion, but some apple would be nice too.
So you got our mud also? Yesterday thunderstorms was something else… Got mud? Yep, no shortage here.
Rain is still better than snow. Snow is still better than ice. Its mid December afterall, so you wont here complaining about thunder storms
Amen, brother!
Or you could dig a little piece of root from a pear tree and wallah, rootstock.
Interesting… I might have to try that. Thank you!
You don’t need to propagate rootstock. You buy it in the Spring and pot it until it goes dormant in Fall.
I would do that if I had a time machine.
