Wildlife in our gardens

looks like it. here they make them out of reeds and cattail fronds. mom sits pretty low in the nest so you likely wouldnt see her unless she was entering/ exiting at the time.

I forgot the name of this butterfly, but it landed near on top of our compost bin before.

I wonder why this year I see no song birds, now I know. 2 of these hawks just visited my garden, I don’t have crows anymore, they used to steal my blueberries. It’s on top of the umbrella.

Was down in the wild portion of my property today making some grafts. Made that area into a micro climate. Get lots of wildlife here. This appeared to be a bluebird. Rabbits are on the move! There are hundreds! This one is unique he has a red patch on his back behind his head.

Update: actually looks more like a purple martin. Eastern bluebirds are normally slightly lighter blue which i thought was odd at the time.Three Bluebird Species / Kansas Bluebirds / Wildlife Diversity / Services / KDWP - KDWP

I am trying to clean up a sadly neglected nursery area and grass has taken over some of the potted trees. I was pulling them up and holding them hugged up to my body to pull the grass out. For some reason I looked down and saw this:

She was guarding her brood. She was so intense that her red belly light seemed to be glowing.

Noone wants that bite you were one very lucky lady. A recluse has nothing on her venom. I’m hopeful this year will be kind to you. Clearly you are very fortunate already after that close call. 4 Venomous (Poisonous) Spiders Found in Kansas (2023) - Bird Watching HQ

There are many quail who come here to eat berries, grass seeds etc. and hide out from predators. The blackberries offer them perfect cover. This is one of the less shy bob whites.

Water birds are pretty shy, but they hunt here regularly at the pond. There are many cranes, herrons etc… Many are endangered and all of these are protected. Every day they come here looking for fish. There is always something they can eat. Snuck up to photograph this one by popping up from behind a hill on the 4 wheeler with the phone already zoomed out in my hand.

These are some of my favorite residents in the orchard. Sprayed him with the grass from the mower but was glad he could get away in time.

That is gross and hilarious - at the same time!

I’ve been wondering where are my praying mantises, here is one.

This one must be eating something because it grew very quickly, just a tiny thing I put on my rose Boscobel and here it is changing to a much bigger shell.

Hey, young opossum, you don’t belong in the orchard. I’ll escort you out.

Was trying to prune a plum tree but this baby bird was in the way. I was about 12 inches away and he didn’t move. I offered him some seeds but he wasn’t interested. Guess he was waiting for his mom. Thought he might be a baby cardinal but the beak doesn’t look right.

It may not have moved, but it was giving you the look.
