One of the only always welcome critters to the yard an eastern box turtle. The anoles are also a welcome sight
Hungry hungry caterpillars. Monarch on my Giant Milkweed for the first one and Gulf Fritillary on Passionfruit for the second one.
Gopher tortoise. We have two on the property, one in the front and one in the back. This one is missing one of his front paws, but that hasn’t stopped him from digging his holes. I wanna get some gopher apples or pygmy pawpaws for them to eat.
I’m convinced skinks are snakes that decided they wanted limbs lol
Glass snakes are actually lizards that decided they didn’t want legs. There was 3 major destinctions between lizards and snakes, but I have forgotten them.
snakes actually evolved from lizards.
Here are some recognized differences between snakes and lizards.
Number one, as folks have pointed out is that lizards have legs and snakes do not have legs.
Lizards have external ears. Snakes “hear” vibrations through skull bone.
Lizards can close their eyes. Snakes cannot — they have a transparent scale that covers their eyes.
Lizards can shed their tails; snakes cannot.
Lizards have two lungs; snakes only one lung that works.
Snakes have more flexible jaws than lizards.
That face though. lol
I bet he went for a ride to the park with you and you forgot to take him home.
Not really.
There’s nothing special about “key West” chickens. Chickens (aka red junglefowl) are native to tropical SE Asia so they naturally do well in any tropical area once they escape captivity.
Hawaii (and especially Kauai, because Europeans didn’t successfully release mongoose onto that Hawaiian island) is loaded with them, originally brought by the Polynesians
I had the good fortune of spending almost a month on various Hawaiian islands as part of my geology education and it is a bit of a shock seeing chickens everywhere, but you get used to them soon enough
The Hawaiian feral chickens mostly came from chicken coops getting wiped out during hurricanes Iwa and Iniki. They’re basically a land race of mixed breeds now.
I was sent a key west chicken once by airplane. They are definitely feral. They can fly like a pheasant, run like a greyhound, steal food like a master thief, and fight like Mike Tyson , expect many chickens to look like the keywest type in your hen house! Well, ultimately, i rescued a problem chicken who was robbing tourists for their food. He wore out his welcome in key west.
Let it be recorded in Manhattan Hall that there’s not a chicken on the planet that Clark can’t master.
Yopes!
The little one is him. He looks innocent doesn’t he? Clarkinks older fruit and vegetable growing Projects in Kansas
I had no problems hanging on to him. I had a hen house full of hens. In my area rules are simple rob any racoon, coyote , possum, chicken hawk, weasel, mink, dog, rabbit , squirell, cat etc you can get away with. He was great protection for my flock.
