Looks like a barred owl. We did have a pair here but I I haven’t seen them in a couple of years. They are big birds!!

We have Barred Owls in our wood lot. Flush them out every so often, if you don’t see them you don’t know they were there, their flight is so silent.

funny thing is the abandoned field behind me has hawks patrolling it constantly but they never had tried to get my birds. i tucked my coop and run under the boughs of my big red pines. maybe thats what deters them from trying to get my birds. i dont even have netting covering the top of the run. i see them perched at the tops of my pines but their eyes are on that field out back.

We always have a few bluebirds around, but they are constantly in our garden since we put up nesting boxes.

Could you show me any pictures of your nesting boxes? I put up at Bird House, I would and nesting box there was probably some more generic on a couple of the trees in my backyard, not far from where I see a lot of blue birds eating my bird seed and suet, but they have never decide to nest on my property. They probably don’t like my nest box design
A fun thing to do is…
To put a blue tooth speaker in a bush or tree , and play different bird calls ,placing in in good viewing range of a chair. Often if done at the appropriate Season ( May is good here ) that bird will show up within a minute.
Some people have said this is not good, as it disrupts their behavior. True it does , but if done very infrequently , I see little harm.
A great way to bird watch , and see what is really around. A good refresher course on birds , ID. With call.
Often when I play a call, I can see that bird fly to the speaker in seconds , it may have been in a near by tree , unnoticed to me . So a good way to see what’s really around

It looks like you have a large expense of open land. I did some reading and it sounds like blueberries do not like relatively busy places. I have dense woods about 40 feet beyond the back of my house, neighbors houses within 30 feet to my left and right, and the county planted really huge rocks along the road about 25 or 30 feet in front of my house and all along the road to the left into the right. So there is not an open space that say 50 feet or more, anywhere. It’s all built up or filled with trees.So it looks like the bluebird still like to come and eat from my little cafeteria on the deck, especially in winter and early spring, but they probably would not want to raise any kids around these parts

Here is a story with no pics, sorry wasn’t thinking fast enough.
I was watering a tree with the hose when a hummingbird flew through the stream. I was thinking “o crap I just sprayed him “when he turned around and started catching drops in mid air. After getting a drink he took a shower stopping on a tomato cage to preen then flying through and landing to preen again. After several trips through he was on his way, this was a new one for me.

Do those toads live in the soil?

They like to bury themselves about that deep. I guess it keeps them cool and maybe better camouflage. They also get in pipes, anything with a little shade.

Toads will get into my potted trees. When I water it will disturb them and they jump out and sometimes it makes me jump and swear…
