I go back and forth on whether I like growing Asian pears or not. When they’re good, they’re really good, but some years I get tons of bland ones, especially if we have lots of rain. This year was a very good year for them, and I’m back on the wagon. When they hit 15 brix they are fantastic. I was eating 5+ a day and wanted more. I dried a few batches and they’re gone already. They tasted like mild butterscotch. I’m thinking of adding another tree or two. One variety I don’t have any grafts of is Korean Giant which everyone seems to think is the best. I’ve always been worried that it won’t ripen in time for me in Northeast Ohio. Does anyone have experience with KG ripening in either Ohio, Michigan, Indiana or Western PA areas?
I’m 45 miles south of Cleveland. We get loads of kg every year. No problem ripening and they keep a long time. Mmv
Great fresh. Also sliced and fried in butter with goat cheese.
Sorry for an off-topic question, but what do y’all do for pest control? My Euro pears get worms every year.
Z6…yes!
I don’t have any euro pears near the Asian pears to compare to. I get a small amount of fire blight that is easily controlled. Apples next to them have car, frog eye spot and maraosonna problems.
I spray pears for plum curculio control twice after petal fall. Either Malathion, Sevin or Triazicide are OTC options but timing is critical. The worms could also be caused by Coddling Moth. I think those sprays would also work for Coddling Moth but the timing is different.
