For those of you that had thought that Willhite’s was going out of business,
I just got my new catalog in today’s mail. Hallelujah!!
Just placed my order by phone. They still have my two favorite watermelons Big Stripe, and Gold Strike. I wanted Orangeglo, because of the disappointing germination that I had last year from the seeds I had bought at Baker Creek. Willhite’s has stopped selling it because theirs was starting to revert back to a red melon and was also germinating poorly. I still have seeds from BK and may just use those again this year, and replant, if necessary.
I also ordered my two favorite cantaloupes, Super 45 and Sugar Queen.
If you grow cantaloupes, these are two best I’ve ever grown. They are totally different cantaloupes, yet the best I’ve ever tasted. I give away a lot of fruit, and I’ve had people, who don’t even like cantaloupes, tell me Super 45 is the best they’ve ever had.
Thanks for the tip on Super 45 cantaloupe, Ray. I also ordered Orangeglo seeds from Baker last year. I planted them repeatedly three times and they just rotted. I do not think they are able to germinate.
I had to replant 3 times before mine finally germinated. I wish I knew
someplace else to buy them. If you find another source, please let me know.
You would think with such a popular melon that everybody would sell it.
I got my catalog yesterday also, so glad that Wilhite’s is alive and hopefully well. With the reports you and antmary had of bakers poor germ, I plan on ordering from Seed savers in Decorah.
Sand hill preservation center has Orangeglo and many other cultivars. In general I have good experience with them, although in some cases their seeds were not good. They have reasonable prices and they send very generous amount of seeds, 3-4 times more than the other companies.

I found it at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. That’s where I’m buying
mine. No more Baker Creek for me.
Thanks for the tip Ray.
Have you grown Ambrosia? That’s been my favorite for a while now, and I’ve had good success with it, so I have toemphasized text** continue growing it, but I’m always looking for other great ones.
How do these compare to Ambrosia?
Interesting. My Organgeglo seeds are also from Baker Creek and I (knock on wood) have never had a problem with them. I don’t think I ordered the seeds last year though. They might have been a year or two old.
Yes I’ve grown ambrosia, and there’s no comparison. IMO Super 45 and Sugar
Queen are far superior.
Baker Creek seeds of OG last year were very poor germinators for everyone
that bought them. Mine are going in the trash. If you have older seeds that germinated for you, they’re probably still good.
Thanks Ray!
I can’t imagine how good those other melons are. My Ambrosias just off the vine are ridiculously sweet and mind blowingly tasty. I’m pretty sure I’ve changed people’s lives when I gave them some!!
Definitely going to order each variety you mentioned. Thanks again for the tip!
