Winter and summer squashes, 2026!

I trialed different zucchini plants last year, grew all in cages to go up instead of sprawling.

I don’t feel I had them in big enough pots so this year I will increase pot size.

For zucchini, I will try Zucchini Lunga Fiorentino and Zucchini Striato d’Italia. I am trying to find the “best” one for us, so I can then just focus on it every year.

I am also going to try Fairytale Pumpkins; heard they are a delicious pumpkin.

I just got to try my supposed to be naked seed pumpkins recently. These were the most developed and actually all the way ripe when picked.

Kinda yuck. Very blah in flavor.

At least the seeds are easy to separate from the flesh!

Not a many pictures as I thought. I roasted this one, a different one with orange skin (and the seeds had hulls!) I tried in soup. It was only better in that I could eat it.

I found this.

Squash - Moschata – Going to Seed

I am going to mix them in with what I was already planning to grow. It’s not a particular squash but an adventure.

I may have also got other seeds too. If you like adventure plants and have low will power in regards to plant seeds, don’t click on the link. I am sorry.

Cool site!

Has anyone grown mini paulista offered by common wealth seed growers? They are working on breeding better Moschata summer squash, which is super cool…I don’t know how I became someone who reads seed catalogues for fun…

Honeynut growers- how robust were your vines? I’m finding no clear answer with some descriptions as bushy and other as vining 6+ feet (though that’s technically small). I’m conceding to grow this annoyingly small butternut for the fam. Trying to figure out where to put it.

I’ll be growing luffa, Nanticoke, Desert Spirit, and Maxidiwiac landraces. Going to grow them out front on the south side of the house where they will get good sun and can have all the room they want. They won’t fit in my backyard garden space the way it is with the other crops I’m doing this year.

well here we go. long season varieties need started early here for me, or they won’t ripen in time

trombos, “big guys”, pink banana, candy roaster, triamble and a few other new pumpkin varieties starting. I’ll start a few early crooks and pattypan next week.

they will all go out as soon as the ground is warm and frost is over- first week of May is my usual. i got a bit of a microclimate from being in town.

Johnnys seeds has a variety of butternut squash of various sizes and forms. Last time I ordered from them they had a bush type. I put it in Mom’s yard and it sprawled 4-6 feet and made 3 useable squash on each of the two.
