Isn’t “Harmony Grove” a rubra? I could be wrong, I haven’t seen it myself but have read forum comments before. I’d like to confirm this!
Yes, it is a pure M.rubra. The ‘Harmony Grove’ ortet is growing in a roadside location about 2 miles from my house. Smack-dab up against a black walnut of similar trunk diameter. My initial graft of it, made 20+ yrs ago, is at least a foot in diameter.
I need to shoot a photo… maybe I’ll detour past it today.
I’d love to hear about the size and flavor and how it compares to Illinois Everbearing, and if it’s a must have if I already have a dozen mulberries…
Shorter fruit than IE, at ~1", but plumper. Good flavor, with good sweet/tart balance. Slightly more ‘dry’ than IE. Less productive than most hybrids, as rubras do just one wave of fruit, and they’re done.
This year’s crop was exceptional. I’d say it’s a good mulberry, but ones i had selected from AL, 400 miles south of me, were larger, juicier, but were either not cold-hardy enough or had delayed graft incompatibility eith prefominantly M. alba rootstock.
I’ve got nothing but wild collected M. rubra from around AL. I was trying to get some M. alba/ other species cultivars to add to my collection. After reading these posts, I feel alot more satisfied with my mulberries. Never met a M. rubra I didn’t like.
Morus Rubra is pretty special . Any standouts from the ones in your collection? Or generally the same?
I can’t tell the difference between them. All delicious
Good to know!
If you are ever able to take some cuttings please let me know!!!
Did you collect from cuttings or seed?
I collected seedlings. I have a giant M. rubra in the backyard that throws babies everywhere.
I will gladly send you rubra scion material, but it is too late to send it out this year because they are fully leafed out. Just to make it clear, Morus rubra (pure Morus rubra) will not root from cuttings.
Welcome to the forum. This website is a treasure trove of information, with very knowledgeable members…Good to have you aboard.
Weston Lombard has posted the results of the genetic testing of samples submitted to his Red Mulberry project. It was a huge undertaking, both on his end and the labs that supported this endeavor. A long-awaited “Congratulations” is strongly warranted.
My understanding of genetics is very limited. Looking at Table 2, it seems to me to me that the results are inconclusive in determining if sample leaves are pure Rubra. One sample says Alba and several say hybrid. What is the conclusion? Can someone clarify the results.
The link to the mulberry project report is giving an error and invalid document when I try to download and open it.
id be interested in results . i bought a mulberry I thought it was a dwarf tree but its the smallest dime size fruit that packs a punch . so I’m looking for something bigger in fruit that still packs a punch .
me too. wont let me open it keep getting error
