Ya Li aka yali pear

No FB on Ya Li here, and it’s been growing in my orchard since about 1998.
FB has taken Korean Giant on 2 separate occasions, as well as Summercrisp pear and Esopus Spitzenburg apple during that time frame.

Bring back this thread to ask a question about Yali, this tree is reaching for the sky, I wonder if it’s worth to plant it in the ground, right now I have it in container which makes it even taller.
Believe it or not, when I go to a Korean supermarket, the Yali pear is always empty, and the lychee fruit is not, there seems to be a preference for Yali pear around here. So that’s what I’m doing, take out the lychee tree and grow Yali pear instead. I’m debating whether I should espalier this pear since it tends to reach for the sky.

As for as I know, most Yali sold in Asian market were imported from China. It’s possible they are waiting for next shipload of fruits to arrive.
If you like light, juicy tasting pear, Yali is a good pear to have. It can be stored for long time. Another pear that is similar to yali is Paili. Paili is sweeter

They don’t sell them all the time, but when they do have it, and next to the Lychee sign, the Yali pears were gone, but the Lychee were still there.
Same with Korean Giant, I never seen them out of KG when they are in season. I think on this site KG is more favorable than Yali pear but I don’t see that in real life.

Did not know much about Asian Pears. So far I picked out Niitake, Seuri , Tsu Li. On the fence over Korean Giant and 20th Century. Good to know Ya li is a pollinizer for Kg and Tsu li. I will probably add KG and Ya li now.

Picked Tsu li because it is what our sand pears would be with breeding improvement.

I realize this is very timely, but if the Chinese imported pears you see are the same ones I see, the Ya pears are a probably a different cultivar. The ones in the store near me are light skinned like Crown pears, these ones in the US nursery trade are green.

I bought a ya li pear in new york china town last year and it was a lot more white than the pics. Very crisp, watery and light fruity flavor, ok but i like stronger flavored stuff does that sound like the same thing you have?

Yes, that’s it. I said long ago it is a good pear , but won’t be to half of the populations taste.

Enjoying some yali pears today i have in the refrigerator from earlier this year. Today is January 10th. They are crisp and delicious. I think i picked these in August or September. Asian pears are great for storage.

Is the flavor unique from the other standard brown and yellow asians?

I’ve got Seuri that has a slight juicy fruit flavor. Do you have that? That’s another interesting variety that is somewhat unique.

I dont grow that one yet.

I havent enjoyed ya li at the grocery store as much as hosui at the store and from a local farm and the chojuro 39th paralel sent me. Its actually one of the only ones I spit out and didnt finish. Does it improve with storage in your opinion?
