Zaiger video through Dave Wilson showing how they hybridize fruit trees

A bit rough but worth the watch.

Thanks for posting. I found it very interesting and have more appreciation for the work it takes. I am especially looking forward to the dwarf peaches.

Yep, that was quite the video. I’d liked to have worked there from mid-January this year until middle of March. Jab elbows with Floyd for a while and kick it.

Yes Zaiger is the Burbank of today sort of, as Burbank still is the king, as he made so many kinds of fruit from plum to cacti. And many are still sold, including the cacti!

Great video. Sadly, only four comments on the YouTube page and folks are already arguing about climate change :unamused:

I’ve never tried any plant breeding but it certainly is interesting to see how the process works and the lengths they go to to isolate plant material. Amazing she said they would produce 170k seedlings this year along. How do they keep track of all that.

Even more interesting is see the old man himself extract pollen from this blossoms. Very neat.

Wow! 170,000 plants to evaluate in a year. At some point in time that effort will be considered too labor intensive and genetic engineering will be the norm.

At minute 10:12, Tom Spellman mentioned the release of a Nectarcot, a nectarine x apricot hybrid this year…

Thanks for sharing. Amazing.
