About time for some roasted tomato basil soup.

It is summer… kitchen counter covered with tomatoes and apples.

That’s a lot of syrup. What does it get used for? I’ve got plenty of sour cherries this year but don’t know how I would use sour cherry syrup.

We mostly make syrup for personal use, but in the coming years, more and more black currants will produce, and I will sell some too. We also use to give away to family and friends too.

Rather like you would maple syrup I presume. I prefer preserves or jelly rather than fuit syrup. But I like honey and maple syrup.

What do you make with the juice?

We use it for syrup, add a little syrup that gets mixed up with water. All natural full with vitamins.

Been eating a bunch of Methley but decided to try another Nadia as they are getting much darker. I really like the Nadia. I dont really taste cherry but I like its ability to get sweet and maintain its texture. They seem to be pretty easy to gauge ripeness with a squeeze test. Some of them are very dark but still hard. Others have begun to soften while maintaining texture. Very much like a small pluot. They seem like they will hang a long time.

Methley is good as well but entirely different. The flavor totally transforms when they are deep red. They kind of turn into a ball of juice. My kids have made a real mess of themselves eating them. Haha. They do have an interesting flavor that seems to change drastically as they darken. At some point they become super sweet and the first flavor that popped I to my mind eating a juice ball methley was concord grape. Mine are small enough that a big mouth like me can eat one like a grape. Keeping my chin and t-shirt clean. My kids on the other hand are quite messy. I’ve given several dozen of them to friends and family. All very positive responses to the flavor. It is a bit thick skinned though. It appears they will harvest over a several week period. Nice if you want a prolonged harvest but not as nice if you want to process them into jam or juice.

Unknown cultivar plum. I was told it is mume when I grafted this. But judging from its leaves and fruits, I think it is a type of plum. The fruits are small , smaller than a ping pong ball. Very round. Very vigorous branch growth and a lot of blossom in the spring but only set three fruits.

@Naeem — your corn looks good. Mine is at the point of tassels and developing ears now. I side dressed fertilized and hilled it 2 times after the initial planting… when it was about 1.5 ft tall… and again when I could see the first sign of tassels in the tops.

I use mostly blood meal for fertilizer.

If you look thru the wall of tomatoes below… my patch of ambrosia sweet corn is just past them on the far end of my flat garden bed. Many have 2 ears developing now. Looking good.

It was hot so all the fruits were small.

Brown Turkey figs

The last of Donut peaches finally: with Irish Spring soap on the fence, shiny foil tapes, and pinwheels, we lost less than ten peaches to the animals for the whole season.

Did you plant the corn late? Or is it a late variety? Where you are early varieties are probably picked mid-late June. Corn loves a lot of nitrogen and sun.

Was in Madison (WI) yesterday and got a pick of some paw paws they have growing at Olbrich Gardens. The variety is Wilson. I think they have a few other trees. This one was loaded with fruit.pawpaws

My patch of ambrosia sweet corn.
Won’t be long now.

Jambalia Okra… got some pods near 2 inch now. It starts setting pods at around a foot up the stalk.

Planted 2 more double rows today. Getting a good afternoon rain now too.

This is a bit out of my wheel house but today I made a small test batch of plum jam using a scaled down version of the recipe below. Two ingredients, no pectin. I scaled the recipe down to use 2 lbs of plums. I used Methley. I was a bit surprised at how tasty it is. I followed her instructions heating it in four cycles. Each cycle makes it thicker and thicker. After the second cycle my daughter wanted to put some on ice cream. Haha. Will be interesting to see it’s final consistency once they cool over night.

My previous canning experience is mostly with garden veggies like hot peppers and pickles. First time making something sweet. I used a water bath. Despite adding the appropriate amount of sugar, it has a nice tartness to balance the sweetness. It would probably be used like a sweet and sour sauce with pork chops or chicken. The small batch recipe made 3 of the small ball jars and I out the left over in a Tupperware container to stick in the fridge.
