Grafted this wild patch of native persimmons today. They were grafted over to local varieties.
Grafted this big male over at my neighbors farm the other day. Tree was close to 30ft. Biggest tree I’ve grafted so far. Did several more around it as well. Hopefully it’s raining persimmons in a few years:crossed_fingers:

Since i grafted all those… our weather has been alternating between warm a few days… then cool a few days.
I see most of them making progress… buds swelling… breaking thru parafilm… nothing major yet.
Your tape jobs are a lot neater than mine. I’m contemplating when I’m going to graft persimmon with this hot and cold weather myself. We’ll get another freeze tonight and tomorrow then it’ll stay between 40 and 60 over the next 10 days. I’ve got decent sized leaves now, but I think I’ll hold off for another week or so.
I see similar weather here in Arlington, VA and was wondering about grafting now or waiting. I’m a little bit warmer, but I worry it won’t be enough to get much good callousing happening until next week sometime.
I have a bunch of pawpaws to do as well and I worry about waiting to late on those and having the sun burn up the new grafts as I had happen once when I grafted at the end of May one year. I wish I had gotten to some grafting earlier when it was warmer. I’ll have to work on shading those grafts I think.
I grafted everything about 2 weeks ago. Regular stuff is doing great. Pawpaw are doing good. Persimmon I should have waited. Some are taking, but slowly.
I grafted pawpaws a few days ago because flower buds are growing in size. Persimmons I am waiting another week. maybe more… I’ll likely stager the persimmon grafting to have insurance.
My 10 day looks like this now…
Our latest cold spell… ended this morning with 39 degrees… the trend is warmer the next 10.
I have one more wild DV rootstock out in my field to graft Prok Scions too.
May do that this evening. The rootstock has quite a few small leaves now.
My last little wild DV in my field… for grafting this year.
A decent whip toung…
My last graft of the year… if all of these take I am going to need some help eating persimmons !!!
TNHunter
@TNHunter is putting the rest of us to shame . . . . My own persimmon grafting aspirations are more modest this year – I just want to add Morris Burton to my small American collection that already includes Barbra’s Blush, H63A, and Dollywood (as well as Prok, which has been seriously top-worked).
Here are two small. seedling rootstocks with Morris Burton grafted a few weeks ago. I hope also to add MB to the Prok in a week or so as the weather warms up.
Morris Burton?
Oops. Yes. DK if that was spell check or fatigue. I’ve corrected.
Is there a sport of Morris Burton out there? Amongst the wood given to me by Buzz last year was ‘Large Morris Burton’. I suspected it might be a sport with some type of improved traits, but also could be reflect some abundant optimism and a good site. Curious if anyone is familiar with such a sport.
Donald Eugene Compton from Indiana is the breeder of (DEC Large Morris Burton).
That would make sense. Buzz had a bunch of wood from Don Compton. Do you know if it is a sport or a seedling thereof?
No I do not know. I have a graft in the third leaf hoping for fruit soon.
Those grafts look great Trev, I will be grafting persimmons next week. Our temps are rising so hopefully they will remain in high 60s to mid 70s to allow me to start. I just finished plums last week, planting potatoes this weekend, then I can start grafting again.
Dennis
@DennisD … thanks…
Hope you have great success with your grafting and growing this year.
I think in a few years i am going to have more persimmons than we can eat. We can share with family and friends… and i may start raising chickens when i retire… i expect they would welcome some persimmons.
