18 days later, both grafts looking good.
I wish I did it now
Any idea what the new favorite is?
Definitely let us know what that is! The other one that I got from him (besides CA Dreaming, at your recommendation) was Chul Ri, but that was because I saw a discussion somewhere about how it seems to start setting fruit in year 1 rather than taking many years like most che. I don’t know about the fruit quality compared to others.
I also would like to know, I just have a tiny “Norris” but I’m open to tossing some grafts in the future
I found the post where bigmike mentioned this…
…
thought I would add that I asked England’s nursery what their favorite is and their response was:
"Michael
That would Be Hwang Kum # 2 is the best fruit its Large, Tasty and grows like a large bush but best of all it ripens very Early
Thank you
Clifford England"
The male that I got from Cliff is Hwang Kum #3, so that’s exciting to know that any seeds I get in my other varieties are likely closely related to good genetics.
You talked me into it
Any land where you are building? Need room for trees!
If you can get a helper to wrap so you can focus on the cuts, you could probably do triple that many (or more) in the same time. Not that I ever have that… But if you start to pay attention, it’s surping how much time you use up switching between cutting and wrapping.
I did main batch of praying grafts today. Had a much lower scion to rootstock ratio than usual, so I started getting very sparing with the buds. I alternated between chip and whip & tongue as seemed appropriate, with a couple veneer grafts for good measure. I’m particularly pleased with this tiny, one-bud whip & tongue. A smidge under 2 cm long.
This one was H-118, I also did a couple H-63A.
Well crap. First and hopefully the last time i forget to take my parafilm out of my car. Its a solid chunk of wax now.
Mulberries today. Looks like they’ll be getting electrical tape. Maybe saran wrap would be better???
Its a huge wild tree. Just going to work over a few lower branches to hopefull see how much better fruit from some cultivars is.
So follow up. Looks like i might be mistaken - grafted a year ago … but leafing out looks like a pear not an apple. Must have mixed up something somewhere along the line.
A couple of the grafts I’m most excited about have shot out nicely. Pai Li Asian Pear and Rumyanaya Zorka plum.
Well, I should have re-checked the forecast before I grafted my persimmons. The forecast is a bit chillier and substantially less sunny than when I made up my mind to graft. I keep them on a sun porch which is nice and warm, but that only works if it’s sunny!
Yesterday was good, and I’ve been keeping them inside where it’s about 65. Not as good as 75, but better than the 57 outside. May have to bring thecrate of them into the office where it’s warmer.
Grew out this rootstock for a few years and created an open center with many branches to graft onto…
17 grafted euro plums (and a few apricots just did that will prob die of disease or get its flowers spring-frosted but we’ll see). So 3 or 4 branches of 4-5 diff varieties, will remove the less dominant/unsuccessful branches later in the summer.
Thanks @SpokanePeach for the plum/apricot scionwood !
I checked pecan grafts today. 7 out of 25 have not yet popped buds. I’ve had successful grafts that did not pop buds for 30 days. Weather has been very amenable to success for pecan grafts. We’ve had daytime temps in the low 80’s and night temps around 70. In the last 13 days, 3 days were bright sun and the rest were either cloudy or raining.
I’ve learned not to trust buds popping. Pecans can and will still fail even with 2 inches of growth from the graft.
I grafted the ones from you a week or two before you. I’m just getting the buds pushing the parafilm open. Just need one of them to take, but hopefully they all take. I used cleft. I’m a fan of cleft, but never grafted pecan before.
